what do I do if I’m experiencing engorgement, or i have a blocked duct?
If you’re experiencing engorgement or blocked ducts, new guidance suggests the following:
If you start to experience flu like symptoms, a high temperature, or no improvement in symptoms in 12-24 hours, you may have mastitis and it is suggested to contact your GP in case medication is required
- Feeding as normal – do not express or feed more than usual, so as not to overstimulate your supply!
- Cold treatment (compresses or ice packs) on the breast tissues, between feeds
- Some parents find warm compress on the breast or nipple can be soothing and help with the ‘let down’ at a feeding or expression – however be careful not to increase swelling or inflammation
- Pain relief/ OTC antiinflammatories are often suggested to bring down inflammation https://www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/factsheet/analgesics/
- Try breast gymnastics: https://www.mayabolman.com/videos/v/breastgymnasticsTry lymphatic drainage massage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHD90LlCkGc
- Experiment with different feeding positions
- Avoid hard pressure or massage on the breast tissue, which is delicate
Seek support from a qualified Lactation Consultant or Breastfeeding Counsellor to try and find the root of the problem and resolve it, if things aren’t improving.
